Living on Less Than a Dollar a Day

Living on Less Than a Dollar a Day

I met Margaret in Kibera, Kenya. Margaret’s husband suffers from an addiction to alcohol and doesn’t work, forcing her to attempt to provide a living for her family through her business—washing and selling bottles. Though she works hard, she usually makes less than a dollar a day, far less than what she needs to buy meals that will feed all her children.

People like Margaret are all-too-easy to find in Kibera, the second-largest slum in the world…and home to more than a million individuals. Margaret and her children usually eat only one meal a day, because they simply don’t have the money to buy enough food.

“It is hard to raise a family with the little money I make,” Margaret told me. “Any help you can give would make a really big difference. I’m asking for God’s help, and the help of anyone kind enough to reach out.” Since January 2009, our team has gone into overdrive to provide hungry people like Margaret and her children with meals. So far this year, we’ve been able to ship more than three million nutritious meals of fortified rice, oats, and/or dried fruit to five countries: El Salvador, Kenya, Haiti, Niger, and Honduras.
And we want to do even more! It’s for Margaret, her children, and others like her that Hunger Needs a Voice exists.

Opening Our Hearts to Their Cry

I have a burning passion to help the children of the world. Wherever I go, I can’t help noticing the children as they play in dusty streets, their clothes dirty and their feet bare. Many of them are thin and weak from their hunger. They have such sad stories. I’m compelled to do what I can to bring them food, hope, and the Gospel.

And I know Hunger Needs a Voice® wouldn’t be able to reach people like Margaret and her children without your help. I want to thank everyone who has donated food, supplies, finances, time, and other aid to our outreaches, especially Bill Meyer and Reach Now International; Kids Against Hunger; Feed My Starving Children; Gleanings for the Hungry; and Hope for Haiti. And, of course, I am so grateful for all the Oral Roberts Ministries Partners who already support Hunger Needs a Voice® financially and through prayer. You are helping us reach hungry children and their families with food and medicine.
